Getting Comfortable at School

It’s that time of year where everyone is headed back to campus. New classes, new teammates, new coaches, new cities, new states, new relationships, and a whole lot more coming your way. Going into my senior year I’ve realized how stressful starting up the beginning of the year can be. Finding a new routine that works for your daily schedule. Getting to class on time and making sure your at all your team meetings and practices and lifting groups. Making sure you have time for homework and making sure you still have fun and go to a few parties to meet the people with your surrounded with on a daily basis. Here’s a few things I’ve learned that helped me with finding a good routine:

-Start the day before. What I mean by that is check your schedule for the next day and plan accordingly. I like to set everything out I need the night before. Whether its cloths, water, snacks, or extra gear for practice. That way when I wake up in the morning I don’t have to scramble when I wake up. PS set an extra alarm or two if you’re a heave sleeper.

- Wake up at least an hour before you have to leave. That way if you over sleep you have some leeway to make up time.

-Don’t check your phone in bed when you wake up. Let your brain settle in the day without a million thoughts from Twitter and Instagram at 6am.

- Utilize a daily calendar. On Sundays I like to write out what I have the following week. Practice, class, meetings, lunch breaks, and anything I know I need to get in that day.

- Use your teammates. Don’t be afraid to talk to the older guy/girl. Getting help from a person thats been in the program for awhile will help you learn the ropes faster than if you tried to do everything on your own.

- Be friends with your professor. Make sure your on top of your work and build a relationship so if you do miss an assignment or a class your on their good side and can be able to make up the missed work.

- Utilize the resources on campus. Especially the mental health departments. I have 8 free sessions of therapy I’ll be using throughout the semester.

-Meet new people! Go out and have fun. Whether its with other sports or students make sure you make friendships outside of your team! Get involved in a club on campus and make a difference while your there.

-Don’t forget to have fun. Make sure you enjoy your years on campus and don’t with them away. Make sure you stay in the moment and realize how great of an opportunity you have at your feet.

This time of year can be stressful. But just remember that you aren’t the only one feeling this way. If your struggling there are always resources on campus to get the help you need. To everyone that read this I hope you have a great year and make the most of it. From the highs, lows, and in between. Stay where your feet are and take it moment by moment.
